Unemployment to employment
January 13, 2010emily 2 Comments »John got back from work orientation late last night and started his first official day at his new job this morning. In his orientation swag bag, he found this piece of sheer genius:

I’ll give you three guesses to figure out where he works now. And no, he’s not a pimp (he’s missing the matching red fur coat, after all).
So his unemployment lasted just over a month, really, until he got the job offer in December. And I have to say, praise be that we had savings and didn’t need to rely on unemployment compensation. The day John got laid off, he filed for unemployment. He jumped through all their hoops, filled out all their ridiculous online forms (complete with misplaced radio buttons and a button at the very end that said “Bye!”). He waited patiently to hear back from them. And when they finally got back to him (the unemployment folks are quite busy these days, what with the recession and all), they had a number for him. $275 a week. $275 a week. When the checks started rolling trickling in, it wasn’t even $275 a week. Can you imagine what it’s like for people who actually need that money? Who rely on it to buy groceries and pay their mortgage or rent? We’re lucky enough that we were able to rely on John’s severance package and our rainy-day savings to see us through unemployment. I can’t even begin to imagine what it would be like for people who didn’t have that kind of cushion.
But! (wipes hands briskly) That’s behind us now! 2010 is upon us and good things are in store for us, I’m sure. After all, how many people can say that they have a fancy red fedora backing them up?

Phew! Great news about the job. I hope John enjoys a long and illustrious career working for Dick Tracy.

I’m certainly hoping it involves some sort of Linux…
