Ivory tower

Something has been bugging me about the stories that have circulated about the murder of Yale graduate student Annie Le. It’s the way these stories have cast the job of her alleged murderer, Raymond Clark. From Yahoo, for example: “As a technician, Clark’s duties included cleaning mouse cages and the floors of the lab. Le’s work involved experiments on mice that were part of research into enzymes that could have implications for treatment of cancer, diabetes and muscular dystrophy.” Now, I’m not condoning what he allegedly did. Let’s be clear on that. But I take issue with the insinuation that people who work with their hands for a living are somehow less than people who work with their heads. It’s the divisive town/gown dichotomy all over again, isn’t it?
