The Time of My Life

I think I was in fifth grade when I watched Dirty Dancing, with my friend Amanda. I remember thinking how scandalous it all was. Not the movie, but the fact that I was watching it. I begged my sister not to tell on me. She did, anyway, but I don’t remember what my punishment was. In any case, I remember it was A Big Deal to have watched Dirty Dancing at that age. (It was equally memorable a few years later when Amanda and her parents and I visited Mountain Lake, in Virginia, where much of the movie was shot. Nobody puts Baby in a corner!) Anyway. Imagine my surprise when, this past weekend, I was flipping around on the tv, trying to find something to watch and… wait, what was that? Dirty Dancing on ABC Family?!? My, how times have changed. I guess bumping and grinding, with a side of pre-marital pregnancy and abortion, and a hint of class conflict can’t hold a candle to what kids these days get to watch.
