The Time of My Life
September 23, 2009emily 4 Comments »I think I was in fifth grade when I watched Dirty Dancing, with my friend Amanda. I remember thinking how scandalous it all was. Not the movie, but the fact that I was watching it. I begged my sister not to tell on me. She did, anyway, but I don’t remember what my punishment was. In any case, I remember it was A Big Deal to have watched Dirty Dancing at that age. (It was equally memorable a few years later when Amanda and her parents and I visited Mountain Lake, in Virginia, where much of the movie was shot. Nobody puts Baby in a corner!) Anyway. Imagine my surprise when, this past weekend, I was flipping around on the tv, trying to find something to watch and… wait, what was that? Dirty Dancing on ABC Family?!? My, how times have changed. I guess bumping and grinding, with a side of pre-marital pregnancy and abortion, and a hint of class conflict can’t hold a candle to what kids these days get to watch.

Sigh. Snuck my first viewing of it too. My favorite snapshot is Jennifer Grey dancing up those steps alone–engrained in my head since age 12.

Tiffany: I danced up those very stairs! I actually have a photo of it, somewhere.

Tell me about it… What happened to the Full House days?

I was young enough when I first watched it that I really didn’t understand the entire abortion storyline–had no idea what it was, I just thought the other dancer was sick. As you can imagine, vast stretches of motivation were lost to me.
I came from Her Bad Mother, I really enjoyed your "grieving police" comment. People have such nerve…
