Manic Monday

There’s a home movie out there somewhere of me lip-synching to “Manic Monday” by the Bangles. (If you’re too young to know who the Bangles are, I don’t want to know.) I’m probably 12 years old in the video and from the moment the tape starts to roll, it’s pretty clear that I don’t know all the words to the song. Just the chorus. So there I am, hopelessly flailing through “Manic Monday,” when it gets to that part in the third verse: “He tells me in his bedroom voice/ C’mon honey, let’s go make some noise.” And I don’t know what happened, but when it got to that part I suddenly channeled Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby, closed my eyes, and got this pseudo-coquettish look on my face. Considering I didn’t know the words to the damned song, it’s a mystery how I was able to match that body language with that precise point in the song. Caught on video, branded in the annals of history (at least as long as VHS technology is around), it probably ranks somewhere in the top ten of cringe-worthy adolescent embarrassing moments for me. Happy Monday, everyone.

for the longest time I thought the words were "man ache Monday", no idea why. Actually, that is still what I hear even though I know better now.

HA – oh my god.  But you know, I was pretty impressed with that face of yours at the time!  Luckily, I also had my chance to shine during what was, if I recall, a truly special rendition of Walk Like An Egyptian.  And thank you for reminding me of why we must thank the lord, every single day, that we safely reached the age of self-consciousness and shame long before the advent of YouTube.

I had that SAME thought when I was writing this post: thank GOD YouTube wasn’t around during our formative years. And I believe I was your backup singer for Walk Like An Egyptian, no? Good times, good times.
