Gaming the postal system
June 4, 2009emily 2 Comments »So, I finally have run out of 41-cent stamps. For those of you keeping track at home, 41-cent stamps have not been good for two years. No matter, though, no matter. Last year I simply bought a bunch of 1-cent stamps that enabled me to meet the postal service’s rate increase. This year, I bought 3-cent stamps that did the same. Realizing, though, that I would shortly run out of my beloved 41-cent stamps, I knew I had to take action. I went to the USPS website. I clicked “buy stamps”. I scanned my options: lots of old 42-cent stamps. Plenty of choices there. A few 44-cent stamps, all in US flag designs. (I have nothing against the US flag, per se, but I like to make a bit more of a statement with my mail.) I looked at the “forever” stamps, with the Liberty Bell. Again, nothing against the Liberty Bell, but I wanted something more cheerful. (And, because I’m picky, I wanted to buy my stamps in coils and “forever” stamps don’t come in coils, for whatever reason. Harumph.) I looked at all of their coiled stamp options. And suddenly… what’s that I see? Colorful fruit! Sign me up! Oh, but wait: they’re 27-cent stamps (whaaa?). But then inspiration struck! I could buy their little 27-cent colorful fruit stamps and PUT TWO ON EACH LETTER. That way, those colorful fruit stamps would not only see me through the current rate change, but quite possibly through next year’s as well! It was a genius idea, more than I could have hoped for in one afternoon. My life is now complete, with 54 cents on each piece of mail I send. HAH! That’ll show them! Wait, what?

Hah! It’s like one of those pesky story problems from fifth grade! I was so bad at those.

I rarely, rarely mail anything. As a result, I have who knows how many 41 cent stamps scattered in my desk at work and at home. Christmas ones with festive trees and reindeer and snowmen. Perfect for July. From pretty much the time I bought them, I have had no idea how much it costs to mail a letter so I have never invested in the extra stamps. My solution? I just stick a couple on there and call it good. So yeah, I’ve been overpaying for my postage for a while now. Yet, I cannot manage to run out of these crazy stamps. I’m sure I will run out as soon as postage reaches 82 cents a letter.
