A subtle but important difference

The difference between UPS and USPS is that when you ship something via UPS you get a tracking number that, after a few hours, you can plug into their website and find out exactly when your package will arrive. With USPS you get a tracking number that, after a few hours, you can plug into their website and get a message saying “There is no record of this item.” You wait a day. “There is no record of this item.” You receive the package, eventually, and plug the tracking number into their website. “There is no record of this item.” It’s still fundamentally a tracking number, right? Then how come you can’t track anything with it?
