The rhetoric of freedom

It’s about the rhetoric of freedom that gets bandied about in this country, chewed up and spit out into clever sound bites and bumper stickers. You know the ones: “Remember Why We Are Free,” “My [Nephew/Grandson/Daughter] Is Fighting for Your Freedom,” and (my personal favorite) “Freedom Isn’t Free”. Can… can I ask from whom we are so desperately trying to be free? Invasion-wise, it’s been since World War Two that we were invaded (when Japan briefly invaded Alaska). And I don’t quite buy the argument that terrorists are keeping us from being free because, well, terrorists are out there and though they’re certainly a threat, they’re not preventing us from being free. Am I missing something?

What a good point. We sure take and run with rhetoric that we are given from politicians, don’t we?
