Top dog

When we moved to Gainesville, they were some of the first people we met, and they opened their homes and hearts to us instantly. They moved away three years ago, and we have missed them ever since. When they called recently to say they were in town, I jumped at the opportunity to invite them to our house for dinner, and I didn’t hesitate to ask them to bring their dog with them. She’s a gorgeous Bernese, full of wiggle and excitement, and we’ve known her since she was a puppy. She and Luke have met before, at the dog park, and I thought they could hang out together. I confess I had images of the two of them romping around in the backyard until they were exhausted, while us humans got to catch up. Little did I know that the dogs had other plans in mind. As soon as we introduced the dogs, both started growling and snarling and lunging at one another. This continued for a couple hours, both indoors and outdoors, until they finally reached a truce: they settled at opposite ends of the room, facing away from one another, each dog completely ignoring the other. Luke didn’t look at us until our guests, human and canine, left the house late last night. So, that whole second dog thing? Maybe not such a great idea.
