Dear Parents-To-Be

Your child will be unique, I assure you. Your child will be different and distinctive in their own way. They will make choices and develop a personality that distinguishes them from the pack. They will be, as it were, not unlike a snowflake: remarkable and peerless. All of which is to say, you need not give them a name that you think will make them stand out from the rest. They can do that by themselves. “Unique” names only make them look and feel like clods. I have assembled, for your benefit, a small selection of the “unique” names I’ve come across in my student rosters over the years:

  • Kritika
  • Kia
  • Mahogani
  • Carlyn (no, I didn’t misspell that)
  • Dulce
  • Jakarta
  • Lashley
  • Marcuz
  • Rian (girl’s name)
  • Naomy
  • Ciara
  • Ever
  • Shekinah
  • Jeni
  • Brittni
  • Jordyn

Please, I implore you. Before choosing a name, weigh your options. Understand that this child of yours is going to have enough problems of its own. Give it a good start in life. Consult this website for further information, perhaps especially this page.

Sh*t.  You must have been perusing our girl name list.  Thank goodness we’re having a boy, or else I know you’d be judging me FOREVER.

    XOXOLOL,
    Marcuz’s Mama

    (just trying it on)

Also, you need to read Freakonomics – it has an excellent chapter on this very phenomenon, and how these kids’ parents have really screwed them over.
